What does it look like to topple over hierarchy and re-imagine it to be structurally different? How can rearranging these principles change the way society works? Can we use this model, for example, to attempt to eliminate structural racism? What else?

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is traditionally represented as a pyramid, with basic physiological needs at the base and self-actualization at the top. While it might be challenging to completely transform it into a closed-loop system, we can attempt to illustrate it in a more circular or interconnected format to emphasize the dynamic and iterative nature of these needs. Keep in mind that this is a conceptual rearrangement, and the essence of Maslow’s theory remains intact.
- Physiological Needs:
- Foundational requirements such as food, water, shelter, and sleep.
- Safety and Security:
- Once physiological needs are met, individuals seek stability, safety, and protection.
- Social Connection:
- Building relationships and a sense of belonging with others, fulfilling the social needs.
- Esteem and Recognition:
- Recognition of achievements, self-esteem, and a sense of accomplishment.
- Self-Actualization:
- The realization of one’s full potential and pursuit of personal growth.
Now, let’s connect it instead to a closed-loop, sustainable system/structure:
- Self-Reflection and Awareness:
- Individuals continuously reflect on their current state and assess their needs. The marbles in the image represent consciousness.
- Feedback and Adaptation:
- Based on self-reflection, individuals receive feedback from their experiences and adjust their priorities accordingly. The movement of marbles through the different and co-existing states represent this idea.
- Continuous Growth:
- As individuals meet their needs, they are propelled toward self-actualization and personal development. This is the force moving the wheel forward continuously.
- Interconnectedness:
- The various needs are interconnected, and fulfillment in one area positively influences others. Each layer of human needs exists simultaneously and is interdependent on each. A lack of balance would throw off the entire machine.
- Cyclical Nature:
- The process is continuous and cyclical, emphasizing the iterative nature of human needs and development.
